IV Estonian-Latvian History Conference: Conquerings and Victories in Valga/Valka and Nearby - Road to the First Centennial of the Republics of Estonia and Latvia
Background of the Conference
The year 2018 marked the centennial celebrations for both the Republic of Estonia and the Republic of Latvia, which were commemorated with ceremonies on both sides of the border. The efforts of both nations to achieve independence had indeed begun decades earlier, but they were realized within the same calendar year. Formally, Estonia declared independence in February 1918, but the Estonian state began to function only after Germany's defeat in World War I. Similarly, the independent Republic of Latvia was proclaimed at the end of World War I, but considerable effort was still required to achieve actual independence. The conference aimed to provide an overview of the differences and similarities in the development of the Estonian and Latvian states at various stages of history.
Conference materials are avalable in the Estonian version of the museum website.
