Before the start of the tourist season, a large banner was put up on the side wall of the Valga Museum, announcing that the museum is now seventy years old and informing about the events that will take place during the museum's anniversary year.
"Some events have already taken place within the first two months of the year, but most are still ahead," says museum director Neeme Punder. At the end of January, the museum's anniversary was celebrated, and in mid-February, the 180th anniversary of the legendary Count Berg and the 150th anniversary of Sangaste rye took place. In fact, the theme related to Berg continues at Valga Museum. On July 12th, the traditional folklore festival "Pig in the Rye" will take place, dedicated to Count Berg, his famous rye variety, and other endeavors, as he was indeed a man of wide scope. "Prior to the folklore festival, we will conduct a series of lectures on topics related to agriculture, entrepreneurship, education, science, and other fields in our county," explains Punder.
This year also marks the anniversary for several cultural figures associated with the Valga region. It is 150 years since the birth of the poet Ernst Enno, 115 years since the birth of the novelist Bernard Kangro, 130 years for the first Estonian Olympic gold medal winner Alfred Neuland, and 155 years for the architect Georg Hellat, to name a few of the jubilarians. At the end of April, the August Gailit short story award will be presented in Valga, to which the museum contributes by organizing an August Gailit exhibition. In May, we will organize a joint museum night with the Latvian-Valka Local History Museum on both sides of the border. In November, together with colleagues from Valka, we will conduct the ninth Estonian-Latvian history conference. There will be a lot of joy for work in the Museum.
