This year marks several jubilee anniversaries related to the legendary Count Friedrich Georg Magnus von Berg of Sangaste. It has been 180 years since his birth, and his significant creation, Sangaste rye, celebrates its 150th anniversary.
The themed evening dedicated to the anniversaries of Count Berg and Sangaste rye took place at the Valga Museum on February 12 at 16:00. Vahur Kukk from the Estonian Rye Association, who also appeared on RuutFM radio in the morning, spoke about the breeding work of Sangaste rye and its further development. Anneli Puksov, the custodian of Count Berg's heritage, provided an overview of where traces of Count Berg can be found today. Writer and cultural historian Loone Ots talked about Count Berg as a cultural hero and myth, which is becoming a local legend.
Events related to both anniversaries continue in Sangaste and elsewhere in Estonia and will last for several more months.
