At Valga Museum, visitors can enjoy an exhibition dedicated to short-story writer and novelist August Gailit, who was born at Kuiksilla near Sangaste, Valga County. Additionally, the second hall of the gallery features displays about four other writers connected to the County.
The August Gailit exhibition, which will remain open to visitors until the end of July, is prompted by the awarding of the short story prize named after the writer in Valga this year and the return of his remains to his homeland in January. On display, there are materials reflecting the writer's and his relatives' biographies and creative paths, older editions of his works, some of his personal belongings, audio and video clips, and more. An attempt is also made to provide an overview of the environments in which the writer lived, both in Estonia and later in exile. To enliven the exhibition, video and audio tools are also used.
Among the other four writers connected to Valga County, who are featured in the second gallery hall, are Ernst Enno, Bernard Kangro, Hella Wuolijoki, and Henrik Visnapuu. Of these, Ernst Enno and Bernard Kangro are celebrating jubilees this year: Ernst Enno's birth was 150 years ago and tBernard Kangro's 115 years ago. Hella Murrik-Wuolijoki, who was born near Taagepera and grew up in Valga, played an important role in international politics in addition to her literary activities. Henrik Visnapuu, who was born at Leebiku, Helme Parish, was an outstanding poet and a close friend of August Gailit for decades.
